You should use a shoe which optimises this, has ground seating on the inside edge of the shoe and has a full crease through the shoe.

Feet are often very hard and contracted in a dry environment. Horses have often retained a lot of sole. This is a natural protection against the harsh environment that they are in. Take care not to remove too much of the protective element.

Grip should be optimised on pavement/tarmac as a steel shoe can be very slippy on these types of surfaces. Also they can be very hard on the shoes wearing them out prematurely.
